It an oil of a light yellow clean color of low acidity (free fatty acid below 2%) produced by crushing the Niger seed. Its principle use in India is as edible oil. In Europe the oil is put to many uses, including the preparation of medicines. Is an oil which can be easily adulterated with groundnut oil, and in a small sample, detection of this adulteration is not always easy.
The drums in which the oil is filled for export must be thoroughly cleaned and if at destination any bad smell is noticeable the oil must be analyzed for water content. Water left in the drums may be the cause.
